Trimming your doors and windows

Once you are finished with the assembling work of the doll house kit, you are required to do some trim work to give your doll house an ultimate finish. Doll house comes in various styles like Victorian doll house, White Colonial Homes and many more. Each of these homes requires trimming work. The reason of trim remains the same only the method of trimming changes. For example, Victorian homes use various stylish trim for both the interior as well as exterior decoration of the homes while White Colonial Homes requires interior trims only.

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: Depends on the size of the doll house.

Here's How:

Trim methods can be apex trim or porch trim. Apex trim is used when we are concerned with roof decoration while porch trim is applied on Victorian Homes. Corner Moulding is also known as angle moulding. It is used to finish off the exterior of the doll house. It can also be used as a roof cap. Channel Moulding is used to trim off the back edges of the walls and floors of the doll house.

Window Interior Trim: Door and window casing or strip wood can be used to trim the interior of the windows. Many windows come with default interior trim to fit the interior. You can use one piece of 18-inch trim for standard window. The interior trim covers the interior frame of the window as well as the opening space between the window and the doll house. Now glue the interior trim onto the frame and the wall. While gluing trim, make sure that the window is centered in it’s opening, so that the space will be covered by the trim.

Interior Door Trim: Interior door trim has three pieces. Wood head blocks are normally applied on the edges of doorframe with the door and window trim. It can also be used on the exterior, side-by-side to create another fancy Victorian Trim. To glue the trim requires lot of precision and patience as spacing plays an important role.

Tips:

  • There are different sizes and trims available in the market. So it is better to decide earlier what exactly you want.
  • Match the two pieces of trim together. If the pieces don't fit exactly, sand with an emery board or a piece of fine sandpaper.
  • It will be a wiser move to cut all interior mouldings before you paper or paint the walls. This way you will not get fingerprints on the paper or paint while you are measuring.
